I've always known my fuel pump was bad after it made a moaning noise for a
while and then the car suddenly stopped working, leaving me stranded on the
side of the road. ;)  It's an inexact test, to be sure.  I would try the
flow test first.

As far as a new pump, I just bought a Pierburg replacement unit from ---
hold on to your hats, folks -- Shokan (!!!) through an auction on eBay.
$169 + S/H.  Pump is new and looks good.  This is the replacement for the
Bosch pump that is rumored to be superior to the original Bosch unit.  They
promised that it would fit my car.  Maybe you can haggle with them and get
an identical price, since they just sold me this one.  All disclaimers
apply, YMMV, I cannot (and do not!) speak for Shokan, yadda yadda:
