My take on the "rusty" hoses is this.  The rusty metal connector you
see is in two parts. The piece that is obvious and rusty is a metal
ferrule; it acts as a solid hose clamp.  Underneath it, and threaded
into whatever (oil cooler, PS pump, etc) is the actual connector. 
It is the ferrule that rusts (as well as the exposed parts of the
connector); the threaded connector is re-used when rebuilding the 
hose. A new ferrule is applied to seal the old connector to the new
hose.  

Those rusty old pieces you found could have been salvaged and 
the old connectors used to make new hoses.
