Alternator alignment

I'm chiming in a little late on this one.
"I don't think there is any shimming intended or
required to align these things, although there might
be. Someone might chime in here..."
I think your're right Huw. No shimming to align.
I just replaced all the belts in my '86 5KTQ with the
Continental brand and they fit just perfectly.
I can see how the alternator metal adjusters can be
bent by someone who does not know how exactly these
work, especially the toothed bracket ( I had to
replaced this one because monkey lad who last worked
on it did not know what he was doing).
Also, I've seen quite a few in cars at the junk yard
bent, and thus, misaligning the alternator.
Best trick I used to install the belts (specially the
AC one), except fot the PS one, was to get the
accessory as close as possible (using the adjusters)
to the crank pulley. Then I placed the belt over the
accessory pulley and then as much of the belt over the
crank pulley.
Then, I took spark plugs out ( to lessen the engine
compression) and turn the crank pulley over clock-wise
using the 27MM socket and rachet until the belt fully
snugged the crank pulley.
Finally, played with the respective adjusters to
tension correctly.
