Hello all,

I have been accumulating parts for my spare AAN engine rebuild to replace the
Lehmann AAN (that runs on 4 cylinders when cold) that resides in the car now.
The lower end will be going together this weekend. I'll start by breaking the
glaze off the cylinder walls with a Flex Hone. I will be using the stock
crank but with upper and lower hardened crank/main bearings. ARP main bearing cap
studs will also be going in at this time. I will be assembling the pistons and
rods and installing. I'm using Pauter Machine rods at the stock 144 mm
length. They are match weighed at 602 grams each. They are unbelievably right on the
money at 602 g. I have to tell you that for the money, the Pauter Machine
rods are fantastic pieces of art. I deal with Carrillo and Pauter Machine rods on
a regular basis, and I think I will always lean towards the Pauter product
just because of the quality that you can see and feel in your hands. The pistons
were ultrasonic cleaned and weighed. The lightest piston was 344.5 grams, the
heaviest was 351 grams. They have been match weighed to 244.5 grams to the
nearest ten-thousandths of a gram. All the piston pins are 79 grams each. I'll
finish the lower end with ARP head stud installation. I'm in the middle of a
mild port and polish job on my AAN head and then that's off the get new guides,
valves (intake and exhaust) valve job, seals, ect.

I will be running my good friends Bob Pastore's code and VMAP. I just have to
chime in about the pinging topic that has been going around the past few
days. I have yet to hear or feel any pinging under boost or any other condition
with Pastore's code. Another friend of mine (Phil Ackley) who has a full RS2
engined S6 (and then some) said he felt detonation or pinging with someone's code
but I don't remember who's it was. I was in the car with him when he felt
this and I could not feel/hear/smell /taste anything out of the ordinary. Whoever
was having the pinging issue, have you tried a better grade of petrol? I
tried to save a couple bucks one day when I ran a lower grade fuel (89) in my Euro
200/5000 that Jim Pasqualoni know owns (Dammit! I should not have sold that
car!) The car ran like dog crap and I actually siphoned the tank and used the
gas for my lawn mower. Off to the gas station for my usual 93/94 and all was
well again. That was the only time I felt or knew what pinging "should" feel
like.

Jim
