lcd clock bad segments

Hi,

i have a few bad segments in the clock (time) on the
'89 200tqa 10v

the bad segments are all in the bottom right hand
corner of the clock 
display

it looks like a bad / dry connection in the clock unit

I have tried pulling the fuse for a while but that
doesn't seem to have 
worked. this technique works on golf 2s though......
i have also waggled all of the connectors in the dash
unit, to no avail

is this repairable or is it a new clock deal?
i am just after opinions as to whether or not it is
worth disassembling 
the dash on the dining room table.
Mrs L is not too tolerant of such manoeuvres if there
is not even a 
glimmer of a chance of success
