Do what the professionals do, if you have a kiddie pool, fill with water
& mix in a little clorox, put in carpets and let them soak. After
they've soaked for a while, scrub a while with a stiff bristle broom,
soak again. Then scrub with some good soap (carpet place uses liquid
Tide), rinse and repeat until they're clean. Wet vac and hang them up to
dry. If you've got a compressor, blast them at close range with a blow
gun.
Sounds like a PITA, and it is, but you have to remember, you're trying to
remove decades of imbedded dirt.
YMMV, but it worked well on the tan carpets in my 300TD.

There are two types of tragedies in life. One is not getting what you
want, the other is getting it.
