Fuel Pump

Saw this comment on a Google Audi group -
  
  "The fuel pump motor is cooled by the gas in the tank. When it gets near empty 
   the pump is no longer immersed in fuel and tends to heat up and sometimes burn out."
  
  I would not think that anything that 'heats up' or 'burns out' would be a good thing in the fuel tank....?!
