Thats 100% true. I've even seen the effects of one that runs dry. My silver
5k was sitting with the CIS fuel distributor off for repairs and the fuse
panel somehow got wet and shorted the FP relay during a rain storm. While I
was asleep in bed the pump turned on and pumped the tank dry since the lines
were off, then the pump went up in smoke. I still have it, all of the wiring
inside the tank is melted, and even the plastic bracket for the pump was
reduced to plastic slag. I'll take pics once I get some new batteries for my
digi-cam.
