Porsche designed the 914 as a Karman Ghia replacement, but management  
changes at VW killed the deal.  Porsche had too much into the project to  back out, 
so they sold the car themselves.  It was marketed as a VW-porsche  in europe.
Same thing happened with the 924.  It was between Audi and Porsche  though.
 
Those were the days when porsche was run by engineers.  They took on  all 
sorts of technical projects for other companies.  Now they are run by  bean 
counters and marketing a#$holes.  SUVs and cupholders are more  important.
