If you have clean bare metal, I would etch prime it
with some zinc based
primer, then paint with colour and/or lacquer it since
the primer tends
to be porous so that it provides a good key to paint
that goes on top of
it and hence is not rustproof per se, but will take
care of SMALL
amounts of oxidation already on the surface of the
metal.
only then would I stuff/cram/pack/plaster it full of
the products that
others have suggested.
obviously this does not apply to hot zinc galvanising!
AFAIK paint won't stick to most of the rustproofing
products on the market
