Intecooler swallows sock! no power or boost.

That's right - it ate a filter sock! Late '89 200 tq avant had been taken to
numerous mechanics before I got it. It would not rev. over 4kRPM and had no
power. Car had brand new distributor among other fixes from prior shops. I
noticed it seemed to have unusually low vacuum in the .1 to .2 range under
most conditions. I found the Michelin Man hose to be shot - can't believe
the other shops didn't replace this first. The new hose was being sucked in
when throttle opened! The car ran even worse with the new hose -
interesting!

I checked turbo - spun freely. I bypassed the intercooler and engine revved
freely then blew off the test hose. Pulled the intercooler thinking it might
be loaded with oil - none came out, but removed it anyway. There it was -
the adaptor hose lost the oil trap filter (why'ed they do this?) and it got
sucked into the intercooler, pretty much blocking the flow.

Chock this one up for the archives.
