Well, that's definitely not the problem.  I have replaced the resistor pack 
for the cooling fan (as when I purchased the car a year ago the fan only 
worked on high.)  Fan works correctly on all three speeds (also replaced 
fan motor within the past year as it froze up.)  The XM kicks out when the 
fan goes to the medium speed.  Incidentally, I do have a cap installed for 
the amp.  As to fan failure melting the car - I have a fuse installed on mine!

All of this is really moot at the current time, though, as the tranny has 
no forward gears (I stated a year ago when I bought the car it had to last 
a year and it gave exactly that, almost to the day!)  I have another good 
transmission to put in the car, just have to get around to doing it among 
my other projects (VW Jetta needs a tranny, too, the final drive bearings 
went out; 300ZX needs a cylinder head.)
