I found out, much to my chagrin, that money orders can be canceled.

I didn't get ripped off, I was just trying to pay off a loan to get the 
title.  The bank would not release the title with a money order for the 
balance.  I stood their with the guy buying my car in a complete daze. 

That was the same bank that did not have my title on file.  It was to be 
issued by the state once the bank gave the "go ahead".  Don't get me 
started...
