[s-cars] Online fraud (car related, delete if you're not

I don't think postal money orders can be cancelled so easily. Postal money
orders are as good as cash, and for the purchaser of the money order to get
a refund he must provide the receipt (tear-off sheet from the money order
itself) AND the original money order, OR they can file for refund if the
money order is reported lost, and hasn't been cashed in the last 60 days or
something of that nature. I'm not sure of the exact details, but I do know
that they are pretty secure, and it's not easy for someone to use a REAL
postal money order to scam people. There are counterfeiters out there
though, so you have to be careful.

For car purchases or sales, I only deal with Certified funds direct from a
bank, or cash. If the customer is from out of state and they can't travel to
my state and go to a local branch of their bank and withdraw the cash or get
a cashiers check, they're SOL basically. In this day and age there is no
reason that a person can't go to a bank local to the seller and retrieve
cash. Even if they don't have an account at the local bank chain they can
have the bank confirm the funds, or wire transfer the funds from their chain
back home, and everything will be fine.

Cheech: "How long we been dealing man?"
Chong: "about three months"
Cheech: "and what's the first thing you learned man? - DON'T TAKE A CHECK!"

I found out, much to my chagrin, that money orders can be canceled.

I didn't get ripped off, I was just trying to pay off a loan to get the
title. The bank would not release the title with a money order for the
balance. I stood their with the guy buying my car in a complete daze.

That was the same bank that did not have my title on file. It was to be
issued by the state once the bank gave the "go ahead". Don't get me
started...
