LL, I think you are using US model year data for the
introduction of the type 44 (aka C3).

Wikipedia indicates that the 44 began life in the
_1983_ model year.  IMHO that would mean some of them
hit the streets in late '82.

Historically, hasn't VAG delayed US introductions by
at least one model year compared to Europe?  Would it
also be reasonable to assume Ford had a few spies here
and there?  

Incidentally, the Canadian VW market re-introduced the
A4 Jetta recently, long after the A5 was on the
market.  It is an "el cheapo" model.  Perhaps
somewhere in the world the A1 and C3 are still being
built...
