The 3 wire system is "driver door master" only - passenger door only 
locks/unlocks itself.

The 5 wire (in a 7 wire plug) is the "both front doors are masters" set 
up.  IE, you can operate the power locks from either front door key. 
Very nice when being gracious and unlocking guest side first, your side 
also opens.  (this is *so* pre 
every-car-has-a-thing-that-goes-beep-to-unlock-it 21st century and all that)

More likely older vs. newer.

You should have no problem finding the right pump for the car if it has 
one of those two plugs.  You just might not have one on the shelf 
already.  Try Mr. Semple, Chris, at "don't force it" Force 5....
