Bad Hall Effect Sender/ Ignition Switch?

Yesterday, I stopped for gas on my way home from work,
even though I had a little more than 1/2 tank. Car in
question is an 85 VW QSW, JT engine code--same as
Audi 4KQ.
I filled gas tank and then started engine.
While at idle, I proceeded to place into memory radio
stations since the stereo the car boasts (from a
Toyota; dont ask bcause I dont know) does not keep
memory saved once engine is turned off.
Anyway, a minute or so later while idling in the gas
station (still next to the pump), the engine just
quit.
No weird noises, no sputtering, no hesitation, just a
clean and fast shutdown as if I turned ignition off.
Tried many times to start engine to no avail.
My first thought was a clogged fuel line.
Then, I did a quick spark test while cranking and
nothing..NO SPARK!!!
Left car at gas station 50 miles from home and this
morning I took a look at my other running '87 QSW
(parked, awaiting for a hub from a lister) to compared
against the '85.
On the '87, I disconnected the ignition wire (at the
dizzy cap end) that runs from the dizzy cap to the
ignition coil and cranked the engine and I got a big
spark.
On the '85, the same test yielded NO spark.
So, I took the ignition coil and ignition module out
of the '87 and swapped them into the '85 and still, no
spark. WTF??
I'm suspecting a bad hall sending sensor in the dizzy
or ignition switch.
Later, I will R&R the ignition switch and see if that
fixes the problem. If not, I will also swap the dizzy
out of the '87 into the '85 QSW and see if that fixes
the no spark problem.
What else could cause the no spark problem?
A severed wire between hall sending sensor and
ignition module and/or ignition switch?
The car cranks fine and timing is right on the money.
Remember, it was running nice and smooth and then it
just quit out of the blue.
What do you guys think?
BTW, this car does not boast a timing reference
sensor, thank GOD.
Thanks in advance,
-Louis
