A failing water pump, one with a loose impeller, would show
that behavior. The only thing you can do now is to measure
the temp at the sender (with an infrared remote thermometer)
to confirm the sender values. Any AC/radiator shop has an IR
thermometer.

Objet : 86 coupe temp guage
On my way to the paint/body shop today, the temp guage
(digital dash) flew
up to the danger area. I let off the gas and with the
decreased speed, the
temp went back down to normal. Me thinks I don't really
have a temperature
problem. Or do I? Any guesses? While sitting and idling,
the temp reads
normal. Maybe a temp sensor?
Thanks for the help.
