96 A6 Quattro fuel pump

I should have been more clear with my original post, I actually was 
asking if under normal circumstances can you hear the pump run at all, 
because I cannot hear anything at all from mine right now, and have a 
fuel delivery problem (car cranks but doesn't start. Obviously not 
getting fuel because spraying a little starting fluid makes it fire, so 
we know we have spark). It's not that the pump is noisy now, it's that 
it isn't making any noise at all so I can't tell if it's operating.

I'll repost to the list to clear that up since I've gotten multiple 
responses saying the same thing about the pump getting noisy when they 
fail. :)
