A4 funky instrument cluster display

I'm interested in an A4 Avant for sale locally. The instrument cluster
info-center display "has some lines missing." Is this an updated
version of the Type 44 bad grounds to/on the instrument cluster, or is
this a "replace cluster for $x,xxx" problem?

Also, I don't know if the timing belt has been changed (mileage is about
110K). If not, is this a week-end DIY job, or a take it to the local
wrench for $x,xxx?

OK, one more: how robust is the urA4 Tiptronic automatic transmission?
Is it as delicate as the urV8/early A8?

It might be a bargain unless these 2 or 3 items make it a deal breaker.
