[A4] tires, speaking of tires, anyone have any used 17's lay'n around?

I hate to do this, but I've got some input on this one to the contrary, but
only minorly and dealing with a different car (still valid info for others
to read).

One of my 5000's needed tires bad and I was broke (I say that as if I'm not
now - yeah....right) so I could only afford to do the two worst - replaced
with same brand same size same model tire. With two tires at about 3mm tread
and two new tires (matching tires on one axle) there was no perceptable
driving issues EXCEPT if the center diff was locked for any reason. If I
were to lock the diff you could feel the binding at parking lot speeds (car
would STOP with no brake input if you disengage the clutch), and you could
hear the tires hopping and chirping as they fought each other. Then you
could not disengage the lock without driving backwards for long enough to
take the tension off of the center diff - usually about 50ft or so.

Now you may say "but my car is a T*rsen, so I don't have to worry about
that". Think about it though - if theres enough differance to case such
commotion in that situation at what road speed do you think the rotational
speed is different enough to engage the T*rsen??? Speculation of course, but
I know that I'd be worried about it.
