CGT driver side mirror removal BTDT?

Removing the driver's side mirror on my parts CGT ('86) seemed like a ridiculously simple task.  But once I removed the interior cover and the mounting screws I discovered the long reptilian cable attached to the mirror snaked its way through the door and into the body of the car with no easy means of disconnect. 
   
  There is a connector of sorts plugged into the base of the mirror but it resists gentle prying; moving only enough to show that it is still connected underneath.  I didn't force the matter for fear of ruining the mirror.  Bentley didn't address total part removal and a slice 'n splice on the cable seems too radical at this point.
   
  Any BTDTs from fellow listers?
