1.8 every time. lighter, easier to work on [or have worked on],
infinitely more tunable. the b5 a4 definitely had it's issues - oil
sludge, abs + airbag controllers, control arms, etc but a great car
and very reliable overall when looked after. chipping will, in theory,
decrease longevity and reliability but i've never heard of a chip
related failure. you can search the archives on every audi forum for
the common failures and things to watch out for, but it's a great
little motor.
find a good one from a loving owner with complete service history
documented and go for it.
