S4 (m.y. 2001) transmission Q:

Fans:

I know this is a newer car than the list usually deals with, but I think this 
is a basic fix, hence the Q:

2001 S4 BiTurbo 6 speed.
Goes into shop needing brakes, wheel bearing (rear)

Car comes back with a hard to engage 2nd gear.  All others work fine as 
before, except now 2nd is hard to shift in & out of .

My "check" list was brakes / leaks etc. and other than pads and rotors the 
sytem wasn't touched, no soft pedal / leaks.

EXTRA item done was a tie rod ~$140, leading me to believe the whole tie rod 
was done vs an "end".  Since the Tie rod goes near the firewall in the center 
of the car (above the trans) ................... WHAT items are suspect for a 
certain gear to malfunction after this kind of work was done?

Wrench says take it to the dealer, but I'm inclined to have the dealer come 
clean about "how" the transmission issue arose.

Ideas?
