Importing a 1990 200 from Canada?

Has anyone here tried to do this with reasonable success?  Audi USA will
not issue a letter claiming that the car meets DOT specs because it was
manufactured with "active restraint systems" versus the "passive restraint
systems" required by the DOT.  That letter would be the only way I could
jsut drive it over the border.  The car does appear to fit into a category
where a Registered Importer can import the car, but then has 120 days to
retrofit it to meet DOT standards.

Any BTDT's from the group?
