They indicate a problem, and existing one that is not an indication of 
lack of present lubricating qualities.
So saying "I put this oil in and the motor burned it" just shows that 
it is either a) more volatile (bad) or thin enough to go through the 
existing loss channels (not bad). It does nto say that the oil is the 
wrong weight, nor that lubrication is compromised. It does say the 
motor has some tolerence problems - but caused historically.

Lifter clatter on i5 audis is as old as the hills. One of mine 
clattered happily for 300k miles. QED.
Only on startup I'll ack.
