2.8 12v engines are cheap, and readily available almost anywhere. Used
engines with average miles (~100-120k) go for around $250-300 where I live.
However, it's very unlikely that you'll need to go that far. These engines
are quite robust, and you're probably just hearing sounds from tired
lifters. Depending upon what the sounds are, you may be looking at a failed
PS pump or water pump, but likely nothing more than that.
This is the operative phrase in your question about the engine upgrade...
"...without too much trouble......" If you're worried about this, you can
forget the engine swap. There are many, many considerations for this swap,
and their solutions would generally require extensive fabrication. Off the
top of my head would be wiring, exhaust, intake routing(intercoolers, etc),
cooling, brake component relocation, incorporation of accessories like power
steering and A/C, etc etc... Not to mention that if you try to use a
2.7twith your stock transmission, the trans will probably implode
while backing
it out of the garage.
