hey Ben - IME / FYI amps tend not to like being mounted upside down
since heat rises off of the heatsinks. they also don't like being in
small enclosed areas like spare tire wells. if it overheats / clips
then you know.. you might try 'loose' mounting it for a few days to
see if it's happy [zip ties galore].
mounting behind interior panels works quite well, as these tend to be
cooler places. just be wary of weatherproofing. i bet the CQ has
caverns behind the panels on either side of the rear seat [under the
rear glass]. most hatchbacks do.
IME, i wouldn't bother with the factory front speakers, they are
garbage. the bostons are great - dont' bother with adding tweeters
unless you x them over very high and pad them down a bit for fill, and
in that case only if you really have a hi freq sinkhole in the front
of the car [not many do].
anything you can do to improve the mountings will make a huge
difference. 3m strip caulk is a great gasket maker, and some dynamat
type stuff can really help quiet the door and panel.
i would recommend spending 90% of your speaker budget on front
speakers, since they are really what matters. a 5" separates set is
perfect. keep the tweeters as close to the woofers as possible to
minimise phase and localization issues. a nice trick for this is to
flush mount he tweeter in the grill of the woofer. kind of a fancy
co-axial, if you will.
in the rear even a cheap pair of coax's is sufficient for fill and for
rear passengers. you can run them off the head to save amp money - as
the critical channels are the fronts and the sub. you *could* use the
stock rears if they're not too bad or blown.
too many speakers in the car makes things sound messy. the nicest
sounding systems i ever designed / installed were super simple and
very high quality kit - good sep's in the front, a small sub in the
back and nice amp running it all. in a hatchback it's a killer setup.
have fun!
jim
