Strange Brakepad Wear

Sounds like the caliper is hanging up and keeping the pads pressed against the rotor when the others are releasing.  Could be dirty pins the caliper rides on.  Could be a parking brake lever not releasing.  After the next drive, check how warm that wheel is (caution: don't immediately touch it, just put the back of your hand near so you can feel if it's giving off heat).

What would cause such bizarre wear on a rear brake? We don't carry a lot of passengers, in fact, typically there is only one person in the car.
