I broke the cardinal rule of diagnosis and did a bunch of stuff at
once.....BUT, there was one major problem that I resolved

the michelin man hose had about a 2" split on the bottom. replaced that, and
new spark plugs, cap, rotor and fixed the collapsed crankcase breather hose.

for the breather hose I had a 5/8 diameter spring that I stretched out and
then wound up inside the hose. worked awesome - that hose will never
collapse.

I think my biggest problem was the MM hose, but the others were
contributing.

Once again, it is like driving a new car and the Audi grin has returned.
