Two things catch my eye. 1) the job really should be done with a cam
locking tool to keep things from turning.
2) I'm not sure what you mean by "tried starting the car with timing
off but it won't start". Huh? Of course not, the valve train isn't
spinning. Also, if it WERE to run, you would probably destroy some
valves. I'm obviously missing something ---- or you are.

Hi Grant,
What I meant was with the cam moved clockwise a tooth or so (retarded timing?) and with the belt on and properly tensioned but without the nose fully assembled i.e. without connecting the rad hoses, trans cooler lines etc.
