Ah, if only it were that simple. That reddish crumbly stuff has lost it's
stickum, although when you try to scrape it off the roof you wouldn't
believe so.
You could try something like 3M spray adhesive, but the original stickum
stuff will fail in other places, foiling your efforts.
I think your best bet is to replace it all together. First remove the seats
and lay plenty of drop cloths around the interior or you will get little
sticky globs of that red stuff on places you don't want it, and that stuff
stains. (DAMHIK.) Peel off the original liner (gently, if you want to reuse
it, or try to keep it in one piece if you want to use it as a template for
replacement fabric). Then scrape that red stuff off.
The hard part is putting the liner back. You can try the 3M spray adhesive.
But be aware you probably have little bumps of the red stuff that didn't
come off, and that will show under the liner, making the liner look like
crap. You may be able to put some sort of padding between the roof and
the liner, but I don't know what you'd use. You may be able to find some
fabric that comes with thin padding, but I don't know where you'd find it.
I believe this is one area where taking it to a pro (i.e., upholstery shop)
is worth the money.
But if the car isn't worth putting that kind of money into, then maybe
stripping the liner out, cleaning off the red sticky stuff, and spraying
the exposed areas with flat black paint may be "gut genug" (good enough).
Good luck.
