The crumbly stuff *was* a layer of foam padding between the cloth liner 
and a molded cardboard form.

If you are careful, you can get the whole cardboard piece out.  It will 
be "caught" behind the edges of the A and B pillar trim pieces, but most 
difficult, it will have "some" glue holding it to the underside of the roof.

I was lucky in having a leather interior, so the little flecks of dead 
foam didn't stick to my seats.  I eventually vacuumed off the dashboard, 
carpet, and rear deck.

That's what I did - removed the cardboard, and brought it to an 
upholstery shop.  They recovered it with foam-backed fabric that was a 
close match for about USD75 or so.
