OK, folks. Thanks a lot for your feedback. It seems I am looking at the job
that involves dropping the transmission. I did that once about 8 years ago
in a Golf-II when replacing its clutch. So, I kind of imagine the amount of
work.
Now, it would seem to me that if I am going through this huge (at least by
my standards) effort, it is worth to change the clutch as well. The car has
80K miles (had 55K when I bought it) and I have no idea what are the driving
habits of the previous owner. Dropping the transmission and not replacing a
clutch even if it is only half worn out just does not make any sense to me.
Am I right in your opinion?
When doing this for my Golf, I found out that there exists a complete set of
parts sold as a kit consisting of the clutch disk, the pressure plate, the
centering tool, and the bearings. It was a long time ago and I might have
forgotten something else that was also in the kit. What else I should buy
and replace once I am there? How about crankshaft front seal? I regretted
replacing it in my Golf back then. That seal never leaked before that but
started leaking in a few months after I put the new one in.
Also, because the clutch master cylinder seems leaking (how else would it
get air inside?) I think I should replace it too. Also, planning for this
job I will buy a Bentley Manual of course. Anything else?
Also, what parts places are this lists' favorite nowadays. As I said, I had
a good clue 8 years ago but may have lost touch a little bit. Any advise
would be greatly appreciated.
Andrew
