fragile paint on the newer cars?

Mercedes is having the same problem with paint.  An acquaintance just got
his out of warranty, high mileage S Class painted for free by Mercedes. 
I don't know if they're doing it for lesser models or not.  Misery loves
company I guess.  ;-)
