The radio is stock.  Worked fine until a week ago when I swapped out a  
junkyard stock radio to test if it would work.  Put old radio back in no  worky.  
 
Does the 80q have a ground wire that attaches separately to the back of the  
radio.  I know my A6 does, and I am wondering if the ground wire has gotten  
lost behind the console and if that may be the root of my problems.
 
Thanks for the input.  More details as they emerge.

Gut instinct, if it's had an aftermakrket radio at some point in  it's life, 
chances are someone used the illumination circut to ground  the radio.
If it's all original, time for an  excercise.
