found the dist. was loose under the factory cover. re-timed it. it
still cuts out at 3000 and i found that rocking the front of the car
the idle becomes rough (sounds like running on one cyl) and the car
completely cuts out if you try to move it.

***** Sounds like a loose electrical connection.
Get a long wood dowel or similar and start poking around and moving
wires and connectors while engine is running to see if you can induce
the problem. Poke around the ignition module and ignition wiring also.

Also, remove distributor cap and clean out the insides with alchohol.
I've had intermittant issues with carbon tracks inside the cap.

Hall Effect sensor on the distributor might be having issues. Wires
often fail at that connector.

Hall Effect sensor may be failing - I've had intermittant conditions
as you describe(minus the 3K rev cut out).
If you have a spare distributor, swap that in and see if problem goes
away.
