'98 A6 Wagon with only a 2 spd tranny...what next

Eric,
You were given some incorrect info if I read the digest correctly. As you've seen the 98 A6 Avant is the C4 chassis, as the C5 Avant didn't see our shores until 99. It still carried the 12V V6, not the 30V, as you also may have realized. Both are known to leak, but are otherwise decent reliable engines, if not a little down on HP, especially the 12V @ 172. I believe all 98 A6 Avants were quattro, so there should not be any tunnel fabrication necessary. The 98 A4 Avant was available in FWD, but only for that year. My guess is a manual tranny swap would not be quite as bad as previously mentioned, but probably not quite a walk in the park either.

So I have not been on the list for quite sometime since before I sold
off my 4ktq. I have been really missing quattro and am looking at a
local low milage '98 A6 wagon with a nearly dead transmission. I am
in the research phase for options. It looks like there are lots of
used ones available, but I would rather have a stick. It looks like
the rear diff is a different final drive on the auto so this might be
more than just a swap.

So two questions:

Has anyone here done anything like this?
Are there any common problems (other than tranny) that I should be
looking at with this car?

Thanks and happy holidays!
