If it can be rebuilt I'd send it to Module Master.  I did with the one in our 99 A4 and for $250 it had  a 5 year warranty.  Usually it's just the electronic portion, not the whole pump, and removal is easy. Instructions are on their website.

Apparently these are expensive to replace...and there is an annoying beep associated with it. What options are out there? Do you really need it...can it be bypassed and the beep silenced? I don't have anything that new so I'm not much help to my friend with the issue.
