Diagram of the diff locks?

That is a given, but is there a good diagram of the system somewhere? It
would be good to look at given that everything is not very accessable...

If they both worked fine before, then most probably the "mechanic"
switched hose positions or worse on the middle diff. Reverse them and
see, and inspect for brocken actuator hose connections.
