If it turns on and turns right back off, my dollar is on a stuck txv (a valve that should be somewhere right around the firewall on the evaporator). It will cause the pressure to rapidly increase, turning off the compressor.
Definitely get it evacuated, vacuum tested and refilled. It's worth the money. I would automatically replace the drier.

All systems have a high pressure and low pressure switch. These protect the
compressor (and the entire system in the case of high pressure) from failure
due to either condition. It's likely your system needs evacuated, tested
for leaks, and refilled. If it's not been used in quite a while, or quite
low, the full evacuation is important. Prepare to replace some seals where
they've dried out and started to leak.
