quattro Digest, Vol 52, Issue 55

I wouldn't worry if your engine isn't sludging. reference 50 year old unrestored engine with crap oil. Engine clearances are set with a certain oil in mind. A tight-built engine designed for light oil will suffer damage when run on 20-50. On the other hand, I had a 327 built by a guy that swore by 20-50. I tried to run it on lighter oil, and it used like crazy. Put 20-50 back in it, and the oil usage instantly disappeared.

Also, many oil manufacturers recommend breaking in an engine on dino oil, then switching to synthetic after 10k or so. Otherwise the engine won't break in and the rings won't seat. I know a fellow that built a race engine (first timer) and broke it in on 0w30 amsoil. 14k into the motor, it smoked like a chimney, as it had since new. He took it back to the builder, thinking it was bad. Engine teardown revealed a brand new looking engine that the rings hadn't even seated in yet. He put it back together, same rings and everything with regular oil, and the smoking was gone in about 1000 miles.

Yup. I run Mobil-1 0W40 in my '01 S4 biturbo, and have done so since
about 5K miles new, now the car has close to 80K miles with absolutely
no sign of sludge or any other malady. The new Audi engines do require
thinner oils so they provide adequate lubrication while cold, and I
trust Audi's specs when it comes to various engine fluids. The factory
engineers know what they're doing.
