Light n Wiper switch...

Hi SJ,
I did repair successfully a directional light switch for a '91 VW Golf. It is the same switch as in the '87 4kq. I am not sure about the 5k though, but it is probably similar in construction.
The switch on the Golf was intermittent.
The switch can be taken apart by gently prying apart the locking tabs and taking off the locking snap ring.
The fault was the loose tolerances of the manufacturing (Mexican built car), the switch contacts did not always made connection, they were at the end of their travel. I made the contact more positive by slightly distorting the sliding pad. Also make sure that the sliding pad moves freely in its support - two small springs push it against the stationary contacts. It will be clear when you take it apart.
The two switches (directional light, wiper) are stacked onto each other and there are additional contacts when the switches are put together. There again, the contacts did not always made proper connection. The switch always worked on the bench and then it was intermittent again when put into the car. As it turned out the contacts to the wring loom were just a bit short and moved apart just a bit when the switch was bolted onto the steering column. The connectors from the wiring loom needed to be pushed onto the switch after bolting in the assembly. I added a small zip tie to keep the connector in place. It has been working properly for a year and a half.
I am still not sure that which one was the source of the original problem, the sliding contacts or the wiring loom connector, either of them could have been!
Good luck, Peter

Second question: Can the switch assembly be repaired?
I think I read a post a while back about taking the assembly apart and
cleaning the wiper switch contacts.
