Porsche started this years ago. They went after ANYTHING with thier
copywritten and/or trademarked name and logo in it. They had teams of
lawyers beat everyone into submission. Guys with domains like "myred911.com"
about their personal 911.... got sued. 911 is trademarked. The premise is
that if they don't go after EVERYBODY, they'll likely use the ability to sue
for infringement in the future. This I understand, but they totally
alienated long standing clients. Rennlist used to be Porschelist, for
example. I don't understand why they just couldn't come up with a license
to use the name in specific circumstances (something Porschelist asked for).
Porsche started the trend.. and EVERYONE followed.
As for the Mustangs.... they could print the calendar of their own images...
but having "Mustang" in the title of anything related to a vehicle opens up
the can 'o worms. If they called it the "Fix Or Repair Daily Hot Rod
Calendar".... well... they couldn't get sued. =)
The silly thing is.... why not encourage (via a license) long standing
clubs? Instead these situation develop a lot of bad press. I know at least
one person who sold his last (of many new) Porsche after getting sued over a
personal domain... and purchased a Ferrari. I'm sure there are others.
