Sunroof Cable Replacement

My experience with Audi sunroof mechanisms is limited to the type 44 but
working on the assumption that yours is similar I've be wary of just ripping
into it. I'm not sure that I'd have gotten mine apart without breaking it
had I not had the Bently manual and putting it back together is even more
difficult. The mechanism is astoundingly complex and everything must line up
just right in order for it to work correctly. Although I'd like to help I
just can't see list wisdom being a substitute for the diagrams and
procedures in the book.

What I can tell you is that removing the motor won't get you access to the
cables for replacement. At the very least you'll have to remove the actual
sunroof panel and possibly the whole frame and slider mechanism as well.
Hardened and/or inadequate lubricant is the usual cause of failures. It is
entirely possible for the gear that drives the cables to jump a few teeth on
one cable or the other with the resulting malfunction that you describe.
When that happens you hear a loud popping/racheting sound from just above
the motor. On the flip side, you can't rule out the possibility that one of
the plastic slider pieces is missing or broken.

As a alternative to the book, proceed carefully and document every step both
in writing and pictures. Plan on putting it together wrong the first time
and having to retrace some steps.
