The plates are "yours", IIRC, you just bring them with you and put them 
on the car.

Which is why MA is totally out of sync with everyone else.  Although, it 
makes sense in some ways.

When buying at a car dealer, I think they do all the paperwork - you 
arrive with your trade-in, and leave driving your "new" car with your 
plates on it.

In NH, say, you leave with a paper 20 day plate and then go to your town 
clerk to transfer the registration to your new car, getting new plates 
or transferring your old ones.
