I had exactly the same problem, twice.
1. Radiator cooling fan runs intermittantly after shutdown.
Fix - replace the fan heat sensor located at top rear of Valve cover.
The fan would turn on in the middle of the night . .and run until the
battery was completely drained and DEAD.
Luckily, I was putting out the garbage one night, and heard the fan go on.
Just pull one lead off this thermal switch when you shut off the
ignition. If the problem disappears(no more dead batteries), you have
found your culprit.
2. Interior lights dont go off after closing and locking the door
(there is a 20 second delay).
Temp Fix - remove the interior lights, blue relay/control module from
auxiliary relay panel.
You wont have any interior lights after you remove the relay (the
manual on-off switch will still work). But, it will tell you if that
was the problem.
In my case, I swapped out the blue module and still had the battery
drain problem. I suspect a broken/intermittant "closed door" switch
wire someplace is causing my problem. I havent pursued the issue
further as removal of this blue colored module solved my immediate
problem.

Subject: Intermittent Battery Drain -- 88 5KQ
Fellow listers --
I've been chasing an intermittent battery drain on this vehicle for
more than a year. I've had it in the shop wtwice and still can't find
the problem. There does not appear to be any rhyme or reason to this
problem; the car may set for a wek and be fine, or as the current
situation, it was driven on Tuesday and this afternoon the battery was
so low that with the battery hooked up my 12A charger could not
generate enough current to actuate the door locks or the dome light.
I'm at a loss for how to find the source of this problem but until I
do I have a hard time counting on this for my primary transportation
and that's what it's soon to be. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
