Adding to Huw's response;
And if the subframe happens to be the same as in the VW Quantum Syncro, QSW, (same JT engine and tranny as in yours--Audi 4KQ), which I think it is, then the subframe needs to come down as well to get to the oil pan bolts towards the back of the oil pan. PAIN in the ass if you ask me to remove 3 or 4 bolts.
If you decide to go that route, which I hope you don't, you will have to undue the bolts that attach the tranny mount brackets to the subframe, (the ones that hold the tranny rubber mounts) while at the same time you have a jack supporting the tranny's belly housing.
You would want to place a piece of wood or something between the tranny's belly and jack to prevent damage to the aluminum housing.
Also, you will need to support the subframe on either side with a jack while unduing the subframe bolts (4 of them) which screw into captive nuts inside the chassis (those don't come out).
You basically will need to provide enough support to the subframe to stay in place the whole time while you remove all 4 bolts, then lower it with the jacks. Failure to do so will result in damaging the thread on at least one captive nut/ bolt.
Ask me how I know!!
Having to tap one of those captive nuts with a bottoming tap while inside the chassis is not a fun job.
But as Huw pointed out, the oil pump gasket is most certainly not the culprit. That gasket is paper thin and only appears to serve more of a slight cushion between the oil pump and engine block than to seal oil out; maybe I'm wrong.
Keep us posted on the outcome.
BTW, the cam gasket in my '87 VW QSW began slightly leaking oil some 11K after install, WTH??
It's staying there until I do another TB, H2O and tensioner job!!
