It was great reading all these reminders of people and times past.
True, the quattro list has remained about the same for the last 15+
years. Why? Because people wanted it that way.
Sure, some split off and started forums and other lists, but that's OK.
My charter has remained the same throughout. Keep the site up, keep
it functional, give people what they want.
If everyone here wants to switch to a web forum, that's doable. But,
the message I've heard consistently is "we like it the way it was, and
the way it still is."
For those who don't know, I joined the list in 1991 after purchasing a
used 1988 Audi 90 for my wife. A few months later, the list needed a
new home, and I took it over.
That Audi 90 led to a 1984 4000 quattro, which led to an 85 4000
quattro, then a 90 Coupe Quattro, a 95 S6 Avant, several more 4000
quattros, and so on.
I never made a dime off the quattro list, though my connections with
several parts suppliers taught me a lot about the parts industry. So,
a few years ago, I started a site to cater to the needs of VW TDI
owners.
I sold that business when it became too much to manage (between that
and working a full time job, plus 3 kids!) and moved out west, not far
from the site of the Monterey Historics, which I was fortunate to be
able to attend when Audi was the title sponsor.
I don't own an Audi anymore, and frankly was horrified to see the
prices they're asking for A3s and TTs these days. I thought a Nissan
GTR was expensive at 70k, but frankly it's well worth it if a TT costs
$50k!
As an aside, I fault Audi for never updating the urq to a modern
version, and I see the GTR as the closest thing yet.
As I said, no Audis in my stable, though I confess the search terms
"S8" and "S6 Avant" appear regularly in my browser history. I would
love to own an urq one day, but I doubt that will ever happen.
As long as there are Audis that need a-fixing, and audifans that need
a-talking, the quattro list and the rest of audifans.com will be here
for you.
