Squeezing the Muffler Clamps

In a bout of "You may as well-itis" I purchased the Audi OEM part  to 
connect the catalytic converter out pipe to the middle muffler input 
pipe  of my 1990 90Q. The connecting pipe fits well over both pipes, 
but I can't get the two clamps to close enough to get the supplied 
bolt and nut started. If I use a longer bolt, the bolt is pushed 
outward by the curve of the pipe and it will not fit through the 
other end of the clamp.

Any suggestions on how to get enough pressure to close the clamps 
enough to secure the nuts?
